Yes, actually. That is, if you're using the regular nail polish that you get in Wal-Mart or Target. Did you know that nail polish contains some of the most toxic ingredients in cosmetics and skin care? And unfortunately for us, that soaks right into our nail bed and blood stream, not to mention the carcinogens we're inhaling while we apply it.
Tiffany over at NatureMoms blog wrote a post on nail polish a while ago. An exerpt:
Some of the ingredients of conventional nail polish are scary…Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde and toluene. Dibutyl Phthalate is a plasticizing ingredient known to affect hormone function. Studies have linked phthalates to early puberty in girls, uterine problems in women, low sperm counts in men, and birth defects. Toluene is said to cause liver damage, reproductive and developmental problems, skin irritation and respiratory tract irritation. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and inhaling the fumes can result in watery eyes, headache, burning in the throat, and labored breathing.
I'm becoming more and more aware of the stuff in our house, since we'll be bringing a baby home soon. The cool thing is, I've found a lot of websites that offer completely natural nail polish and remover. I'll be trying some of these out so I'll let ya'll know how they work! For now, you can take a peek yourselves:
Go Natural: Completely natural, hypoallergenic, odor free -- plus a ton of pretty colors and the cheapest price I've seen so far ($5 per bottle -- some are as high as $20!). The only drawback I'm seeing from the website is that it takes a really long time to dry -- 6-8 hours before you can do "anything" without fear of chipping. They recommend applying it at night so it won't bother you during the day.
Spirit Beauty Lounge: A website that claims to do all the research to find the best products for us -- all organic, chemical free. It has a nice selection of nail polish and other cosmetics and skin care, and Maureen at Alternative Consumer has good reports on a few of their products. Drawback: pricey.
Suncoat Products: Claims to be only long-lasting and quick-drying toxic-free polish on the market. As of the time I read their company profile, they had a patent pending on their water-based nail polish. Only drawback that I see so far (and to me, it wouldn't matter that much because it's chemical free) is that it's not 100% natural reason being those types of polishes don't last long on nails.
